Review auto repair facts articles and become familiar with automotive systems, so if you become involved in a conversation about a specific topic you can have an understanding of how that system works. (Example; understand about brakes, how they work, and how to repair them)

Once familiar with a system, locate a place to go for parts, if you are going to repair your vehicle yourself.

Go to several local parts stores to try and find someone who is knowledgeable, but also not over bearing or disrespectful to you when you talk about cars. Every place will have people who are willing to help, and they will also have people who try to be “Mr. Knowledge”. “Mr. Knowledge”, is the person who knows everything about cars and tries to prove it. Beware and steer clear of these types of people, they should stand out like a sore thumb.

Another thing to do that would be helpful is to find someone who fixes cars for a living. (Someone who works at a car dealer or small repair shop) Somewhere you know someone, a friend or family member. You could even ask for recommendations from family, friends, neighbors, or co-workers.
Now when I say someone who fixes cars for a living, I’m not talking about someone who changes oil, or fixes exhaust for a living (no disrespect to these people), but someone who really fixes cars. Somebody who performs major engine repairs, transmission repairs, air conditioning, or suspension and alignment work would be a contact to have.

Look for someone who might be a go to guy who is honest and willing to help give advice. This person might even be someone who you can trust enough to do side work for you at a reasonable price. These people really do exist.
