The first thing to look for would be an air intake system of some kind near the top of the engine

Access opening of the housing cover (Either screws or clips)
This allows for removal of the air filter.
Sometimes your first glance might reveal a clean looking air filter, but you need to remove it to get a better look.
Most of the dust and dirt that collects in the folds can be removed by smacking lightly against a flat surface.
The best thing to do for air filter maintenance is to check the condition and replace every year or every 15,000 miles based on condition.
